Be Here Now (Blog #920)

Every day for the last week I’ve talked about having a sinus infection. And whereas I wish I could say that I’ve been healed (and therefore talk about something else), I haven’t been. Despite the fact that I’ve tried most everything I know to do, nothing has worked. Last night I saw mild improvement but still ended up coughing myself to sleep. Today has been more of the same–gross. Honestly, I’m not sure that what I have IS a sinus infection. Maybe it’s a cold. Maybe it’s allergies. Dad says ragweed is higher than it’s ever been. Although last year I was tested for over fifty allergens including ragweed and didn’t react to a single one of them.

Take that, ragweed. You can’t get a reaction out of me.

Rather than being my usual take-charge self and flitting all over Van Buren and the internet in search of an immediate cure, I’ve spent most of today watching Netflix–in bed, in a chair, on the floor. In the last twenty-four hours I’ve watched four movies or documentaries. I’ve also done some reading. And some laundry. I’ve really tried to take it easy. To just be frickin’ sick and stop trying so hard. To stop being afraid of what might happen if I don’t. If I let go.

This is really hard for me to do.

It’s tough to know when to try and when not to try. For example, if I had’t scoured the internet for home remedies a year and a half ago, I never would have learned about the probiotic that’s been so helpful to my sinuses. But there’s obviously a point when it’s best to call uncle, to let your body rest and decide what’s best. Even if that means being sick.

One of the documentaries I watched this afternoon was called Be Here Now: The Andy Whitfield Story. Andy was the star of the television series Spartacus: Blood and Sand. This means at one point he was strong, healthy, and looked great in a loincloth. However, when he was in his late thirties, before the second season of Spartacus could begin, Andy was diagnosed with cancer. And although he underwent chemotherapy and radiation and even traveled the globe to supplement his treatments with Ayurveda, acupuncture, and yoga, he eventually died, leaving his wife and two small children behind.

The documentary mostly features Andy and his wife discussing their journey with cancer. And whereas for a year or two they were both convinced that he’d overcome his disease, there’s a point at which Andy starts thinking he won’t. The chemotherapy’s not working, the radiation’s not either, and the cancer keeps spreading. Andy says, “I finally thought, Maybe this is it for me, and it was a relief, to stop fighting.” His wife says, “I kept thinking that I needed the cancer to be over so we could get on with our life, but the cancer is our life right here, right now.”

Wow. How many of us think that our life will really start when? When we get over our illness. When we meet a lover. When our ship comes in. I know I think this on almost a daily basis. And whereas I hope many of my dreams will come true, even if they do, they’re simply fantasies now; they’re not my life. Now my life is living with my parents. It’s going to therapy and writing this blog. It’s getting a sinus infection (or cold) now and then. So I’m trying to remind myself that it’s up to me whether or not I embrace these things, whether or not I make the most of them, whether or not I choose to–as Andy had tattooed on his forearm–be here now.

Broccoli Doesn’t Taste Like Chocolate Cake (Blog #688)

After finding out this week that I was (and am) allergic to several common household ingredients (six to be exact), I determined today to get a handle on the situation. So after having breakfast with a friend of mine this morning, I went to Walmart this afternoon. Armed with my Safe Skin app, which compares the ingredients in everyday products to my allergens and tells me whether or not the products are safe for me to use, I spent two hours in the store. Y’all, I scanned over fifty products–shampoos, conditioners, toothpastes, deodorant, soaps, you name it–but walked out with only two things that met my app’s approval–baby lotion (for moisturizing) and unscented dental floss (for flossing my teeth, duh).

Back at the house, I spent some time looking through the app. There’s a section that lists approved products by category (hair, makeup, skin, personal, household). This turned out to be a miracle, since I was able to flag certain items that I could hunt for later in person or online, which is what I ended up doing after dinner tonight. Again armed with my app, I first went to Target. There I found an approved shampoo (but not the corresponding conditioner) and an approved antiperspirant/deodorant.

Yippee. A product perfect for my pits.

After Target I went to Walgreens, which turned out to be a goldmine. There I found not only the corresponding conditioner I needed for my shampoo, but also a bar of soap (a bar of soap!) and a mouthwash I can use. I seriously can’t tell you what a relief this was–not to pay five dollars for a super basic, hypoallergenic bar of soap–but to know that I can take a shower tomorrow without irritating my skin. Now I have everything I need–soap, shampoo, and conditioner.

What I don’t have still is an app-approved toothpaste or shaving cream. Thankfully, these products do exist, I’ll just need to order them online. And whereas I’m making this whole process out to be a national emergency–because starting over with everything that touches my skin feels overwhelming–it’s really not. I’ve already flagged the items I want on Amazon (including a cheaper option for bar soap), and it’s not like my skin can’t wait until I order them and they arrive. I mean, thankfully, most of my allergic reactions are quite mild.

I wish I could say for the same for my internal reactions, my need to classify everything that goes wrong in my life or body as a national emergency. It always feels like I have to come up with an answer, a solution, right here, right now, like if something doesn’t heal this very damn minute, it never will. Seriously, I have to remind myself multiple times a day that I didn’t get into my current position overnight and most likely won’t get out of it overnight either. I’ve been rehabbing my leg for nearly two months and going to the gym to work out the rest of my body for a month now, and just today I looked in the mirror and noticed a small difference in my muscles. So I’m telling myself it’ll probably be like this for my skin too–a little progress here, a little progress there.

As I’ve recently changed my diet (to help support my body in healing my injured knee), and now this skin thing has come up, it occurred to me today that I’m being asked (by the universe, by myself) to pay close attention to everything I put in my body and on my body. And although this is frustrating as hell because broccoli don’t taste like chocolate cake and hypoallergenic skincare products are difficult to research and find, I do think it’s important to do the hard work and take care of myself. Charlie Goldsmith, a healer, says it’s an act of self-love to give your body what it needs. Granted, it can be difficult to know what your body needs at times, so you may have to experiment. But surely one can only benefit from eating well and cutting out those things that are known to irritate their body, and surely we have time to figure out the rest.

On Emotional Walls (Blog #451)

Today my energy meter has been dipping into the red. I’m not sure why. In the middle of the night when I turned over, I felt the liquid in my sinuses slosh from one side to the other, so maybe it’s allergies. Oh wait, I don’t technically have allergies; I have intolerances. Maybe it’s intolerances. Regardless, something has me wiped out. Even after sleeping as late as possible this morning and taking a nap this afternoon, I’ve barely been able to keep my eyes open all evening. Now it’s 10:30. Maybe I can knock this out and be back in bed before midnight.

In honor of yesterday’s 450th blog post (in a row), this evening I did a live video on Facebook and read one of my previously unshared essays. The essay, called A Crack in the Wall, deals with my longstanding history of sinus infections and something I tried to help them. (I let a massage therapist put his finger up my nose.) Here’s the video if you’re interested. It’s 28 minutes in length.

In re-reading the essay earlier, I was reminded of several experiences I’ve had along this healing journey–memories and emotions that have come up during massage therapy or yoga sessions, for instance. There’s a section in the essay in which I say that my body is my very best friend–it’s been there for every experience I’ve ever had–it remembers even when I don’t. This is the benefit, I think, to having your inner life on paper. Not that you have to share everything with everyone, but it’s there as a reminder for you. So often I gloss over what I’ve gone through. I forget that my body has a thousand reasons to be tired or in need of a break. I forget that Sweetheart, we’ve been through a lot.

Going through the essay today, however, I was reminded. When I originally wrote it, I broke down in tears a number of times. That wasn’t my goal setting out; it never is when I write. (I’m going to cry!) But if I’m writing, digging around in my subconscious, and start crying, I know I’ve hit on something real. That hurt my feelings, That scared me, whatever. So many times the last several years I’ve thought, I’m over that, but then I start bawling in therapy or while writing and am faced with the truth–I’m not really over it.

Completely.

It’s funny how we can fool ourselves. I don’t know, maybe you can be over something in your head but not over it in your heart or tight shoulders. For me that’s the benefit of writing or having a body–these are ways to get into myself. My default for so long has been to have walls up. I used to have a friend that would say, “How are you feeling–really?” I’d say, “Fine, I’m just fine,” and believe it. That’s the thing with walls. At some point, you get accustomed to them–you forget what life was like before you put them up. Maybe you get so used to looking at concrete, you even say, “Walls? What walls?”

Stop buying your own bullshit.

Again, I think this is the value of writing or going to therapy. For you it could be yoga or meditation. Even dancing or knitting. You just need a way to sneak into yourself, to see things in a different way, to stop buying your own bullshit. Fine, I’m just fine. (Please.) I’m not suggesting we go around looking for problems, that we all start telling ourselves and others, “I’m fucked up, I’m just fucked up.” But–at least for myself–I am suggesting that if your body is tired or hurting, perhaps you need to rest and take care of yourself rather than soldiering through. Perhaps physical symptoms–and emotions!–weren’t meant to be ignored. (Who knew?) This is a lesson I’m learning over and over again–to listen not just to my head but also to my heart, to be patient with my body and the healing process, to gently and tolerantly de-wall myself.

Dance Camp Gratitude (Blog #444)

Currently it’s ten at night, and I’m sitting with my friends Bonnie and Todd on their porch. Our friend Jessica is here, as are her children, Allison and Corban, and Corban’s girlfriend, Emilee. The seven of us have been together since two this afternoon for what we’ve been calling “dance camp,” a one-day swing dance intensive. (I was the teacher.) First we danced for a couple hours, then we ate ice cream, then we danced some more, then we ate dinner (KFC). Now we’re on the porch relaxing, digesting.

I can’t say what a lovely day this has been. I woke up worn out this morning–I guess I still am–but I’ve still had such a great time. I’m a teacher–I adore watching people learn–and everyone did a fabulous job this afternoon. We worked for over four hours, and it’s amazing to see how much someone can progress in a short amount of time. It absolutely made my heart soar.

And then fried chicken for dinner!

Tomorrow morning I’m getting up early to be tested for allergies. Because they prick you with dozens of potential allergens, I’m prepared for my back to look like a war zone. The point is, since I’m already worn out and getting up at the butt crack of dawn, I’m trying to keep this short. Easy enough. Other than dancing with my darling friends (and eating all the calories), not much has happened today. Well, wait, my recent bad mood has improved. Disappeared just like it showed up–out of nowhere. I’m guessing this is because I got out of the house (got out of my head) , socialized, moved, danced. Four over six hours I’ve been surrounded by smiling, happy people, and maybe their joy has rubbed off. Or would it be rubbed on? Regardless, I’m reminded that life isn’t always a bitch. On occasion it can be kind and generous, full of delights.

For this I am grateful.

Closer and Closer (Blog #425)

Believe it or not, I’ve been up since 6:45 this morning and have been going (mostly) strong for 17 hours. Now it’s just before midnight, and I’m ready to pass out. However, that won’t happen until this blog’s done, nor will it happen until I change the sheets on my bed, which my doctor told me this morning that I should do. That’s right, I have a prescription for clean sheets. Did you know you’re supposed to wash those suckers more than once every presidential term?

As some of you are aware, my health since last October has been spotty at best. For months I had a sinus infection, then caught the flu twice, and have been struggling with a rather nasty skin irritation where no one wants a skin irritation. My primary care physician, whom I saw for the first time in January, then again in February, referred me to an immunologist, the thought being that I was basically born without a full deck in terms of my immune system. So six weeks ago I saw the immunologist, who said my blood work so far was pristine. “But let’s run some more tests,” he said. “We’ll check your lymphocytes and your antibody response to two vaccines.”

So that’s what we did, the final results came in last week, and I saw BOTH my doctors this morning. First I saw my primary care physician, and we mostly talked about two things–my allergy and skin issues–and my feeling shaky. I’ll do my best to keep this simple. In terms of my allergies, she said, “Let’s get you tested to see WHAT you’re allergic too. Once we know, it may be as simple as avoiding exposure (wouldn’t that be nice?). In the meantime, get new pillows if they’re older than six months (uh, try fifteen years) and clean your sheets, since dust mites are a problem for a lot of people, and they like to live where you like to sleep. Also, here’s a new cream to try for your rash.”

Speaking of the rash, earlier she’d said, “Maybe you’re allergic to condoms.”

I rolled my eyes. “I’d have to be DOING IT for that to be the case.”

But really, I live with my parents.

Anyway, regarding my shaking, my doctor confirmed that it was benign essential tremors, which run in my family and we’d discussed before, but have been worse lately. (They’re not overly visible to anyone except me, but they’re driving me crazy.) Here she said that there aren’t a lot of good options until things get dramatically worse, but that some people have had success with CBD oil (which is derived from the cannabis plant and legal in all 50 states, Mom), so I could try that.

The only downside–it doesn’t get you high. That’s a joke. I’d be a terrible pot-head. First, I’m paranoid enough as it is. Second, pot gives you the munchies. I’m trying to LOSE weight over here, not GAIN IT.

Shit, now I’m thinking of pizza.

Otherwise, my doctor recommended a couple (more) supplements I could try and said to come back in six weeks. Feeling encouraged, I killed some time by reading a book then went to my appointment with the immunologist. I’ll get right to it–here’s what he said as he sat across from me scratching his head and poring over my numbers. “Everything looks great. I’m not sure that I’ve EVER seen anyone whose immune system responded AS WELL to being vaccinated as your did. It did exactly what it should have–and more.”

I’m quite sure I blushed. “Why, thank you. We do try.”

The immunologist went on to explain that my immune system really did look superior. “There’s nothing technically wrong,” he said, “although some people have systems that are predisposed to certain infections, which maybe yours is.” When he got up to leave he said, “On one hand, you can be proud that you have such a stellar immune system. On the other, you can be pissed off that we didn’t find anything we can fix.”

“Fabulous,” I said, “I’ll be sure to be both of those things–proud and pissed off–for at least the rest of the day.”

Leaving the immunologist’s office, I went shopping for the CBD oil and one of the supplements my primary care physician recommended. (So far I’ve taken one dose of the CBD oil, and my hands are still shaking. What the hell?) Next I had lunch with a friend, drove home, taught two dance lessons this evening, then went to Walmart to buy new pillows and thus begin The Great Dust Mite Removal of 2018. My bed sheets are drying as we speak, as are the new cotton underwear I bought, which my doctor said I should wear for the rash “to let things breathe.”

I said, “Cotton underwear don’t sound sexy at all.”

She replied, “Well since you’re not SHOWING THEM to anyone anyway, then it doesn’t matter WHAT they look like.”

Everyone’s a comedian.

My body is healthy and capable.

Now I’m trying to make sense of all that’s happened today. I think I’m mostly thrilled. It really is good news that my immune system is not only not-broken, but is probably better than yours (nanana boo boo). And having spent the last several months thinking that something was seriously wrong, I’d like to be clear–this is a huge relief. That being said, I HAVE had a lot of problems lately, and it’s frustrating that I still don’t have a concise answer as to why. Consequently, I’ve been going back and forth today. One minute I’ve been thinking, Maybe my body is a lot healthier and more capable than I’ve been giving it credit for. The next minute, What if all this shit just keeps going on forever–the doctors, the appointments? What if we never get it figured out? But mostly I’ve been thinking, What if I have to wear not-cute, old-man cotton underwear for the rest of my life? But seriously, I’m trying to trust that all these things will work themselves out, that my body still has a few healing tricks left up its sleeve, that we’re getting closer and closer to a resolution.

A Time I’d Like to Remember (Blog #403)

Whatever I said yesterday about my body not hurting “that bad” after jumping around on a trampoline this weekend, I take it back. Everything hurts. I’ve been shuffling–shuffling–around the house all day. Like an old man with a walker. They say the second day is always the worst, so maybe it’s downhill from here–or would it be uphill? I guess downhill usually means smooth sailing, but it could also mean that things are getting worse. The English language is so confusing.

Now I have a headache. I really shouldn’t think so hard.

Today I didn’t have a damn thing I had to do–nothing on the calendar at all. Consequently, I’ve been cooped up in the house from the time I got up this afternoon. I haven’t even gone to the mailbox. (Tonight’s selfie, at Starbucks, was taken yesterday.) I did consider taking a walk this afternoon, but thought, My allergies are already acting up. The last thing I’m going to do is step outside during pollen season and intentionally breathe! Instead, I propped myself up in a chair and read several chapters in a how-to book about comedy.

But don’t expect things to all-of-sudden get any funnier around here. (That’s not the way it works.)

Later I tried to take a nap but couldn’t sleep, so I watched two movies. One was about Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis and starred Sean Hayes, and the other was an old Disney movie my sister and I used to watch starring Jodie Foster. I do this occasionally, feel the need to go back decades later and rewatch movies I grew up on. I find it fascinating. Today I remembered several details about the movie–the opening scene and the movie’s ending were quite familiar–but most of the middle was faint, fuzzy, or even fresh, as if I’d never seen it before. It’s weird what your brain decides to hang on to and let go of.

Other than that, I’ve been eating constantly. The body is such a mystery. The only thing I’ve done all day is either sit in a chair or lie in bed, but the way I’ve been raiding the refrigerator, you’d think I were a marathon runner. Maybe I just don’t have anything else to do. Maybe I’m a “bored eater.” Or maybe I’ve just been starving myself to death on the Autoimmune Paleo diet for two weeks (I turned down spaghetti today). Maybe my stomach has finally had enough of grilled chicken and sweet potatoes and that’s why it’s screaming, “Give me some damn corn chips.”

That’s probably it.

I don’t have a big takeaway today but am ready to go to bed. (If I don’t, I’ll eat something else.) My eyes are watering, practically running like Niagara Falls. But I keep thinking about that Disney movie my sister and I used to watch, how seeing it today reminded me of a time when I wasn’t concerned about going outside because of the pollen count or whether or not what I was eating was good for me. This is a time I’d like to remember more often, a time when I didn’t think so hard, a time when the world worked without my worry.

A Magical Moment (Blog #396)

Currently it’s eleven at night, and I feel like a field of wildflowers is blooming inside my sinuses. Y’all, I know that I bitched about how terrible winter was, about how I “couldn’t wait” for spring to arrive, but this wasn’t exactly what I had in mind. My allergies are taking over. It’s like a pipe full of mucus has burst inside my head. Last night while trying to sleep, I could actually feel snot sloshing from one side to the other whenever I turned my face on the pillow. I just now sneezed inside my shirt. It’s not sexy. I swear, the more I think about it, the more I’m convinced spring is like a twink (a hot, young, often shallow gay boy, Mom)–nice enough to look at, but certainly not something you could stand waking up to every day for the rest of your life.

Come on, summer.

A few days ago I bought a ticket to see Del Shores perform in Little Rock. If you don’t know, Del Shores is the writer who created the LGBT cult classic movie, Sordid Lives, which is about a highly religious, highly addicted, highly fucked-up southern family in small-town Texas. It’s absolutely delicious. If you’re at all twisted and enjoy strange characters and colorful language, I highly recommend watching it, either the movie or the later-made television series starring Rue McClanahan, Caroline Rhea, Leslie Jordan, and Olivia Newton-John. (Leslie and Olivia were also in the movie.) I first saw the series several years ago and still love to quote it with friends.

Anyway, it’s been a while since I’ve taken myself on an artist’s date or done anything by myself for creative inspiration, so I thought seeing Del perform his new one-man show, Six Characters in Search of a Play, would be the perfect thing. But when my allergies kicked in yesterday afternoon, I almost regretted my decision. I’d just driven to Tulsa and back the night before and thought, This is a lot of driving, and I could sure use a nap. But I had my money tied up in the show, so after writing yesterday’s blog, I loaded up my car, Tom Collins, with some snacks and hit the road. And whereas it took a little longer than my GPS predicted to get to The Weekend Theater in Little Rock, I arrived just after the doors opened with plenty of time to get my general-admission ticket and snag a seat on the front row.

As it turns out, the play was eighty-five minutes long (with no intermission), and loosely told the story of Del’s life, including his growing up as a closeted Southern Baptist. In reference to the fact this his father was a preacher and his mother was a high school drama teacher, Del said, “I’m REALLY fucked up.” Y’all, I was sucked into the play immediately and laughed from start to finish. I even cried. During the play Del took on multiple roles that included five southern women and one latent homosexual redneck, masterfully switching between himself and each of his characters, the whole time telling the story of his often unbelievable and frequently broken life.

A difficult life can be turned around.

This was such a delectable treat for me, seeing a successful gay, southern writer who has taken his personal tragedies and challenges and turned them into something beautiful for the world to see. During the play, he described it like this–“All that damage gave me a career.” Isn’t that a great perspective? I can’t tell you what hope this gives me, the idea that a difficult life can be turned around into one that you want. Plus, I love the way writers see things, the way they describe the world around them. At one point Del said a waitress who was a size 18 “lived with hope in her heart,” since she squeezed herself into a size 12. Later he said one of his relatives had a “lived-in” face. I learned so much just by noticing what Del noticed, how to take a little thing and turn it into something bigger and more memorable.

When the play was over, I hung around to meet Del and tell him how much I appreciated his work. Y’all, he was so kind. Even before I officially introduced myself, he said I was “a great audience member,” laughing and applauding at all the appropriate places. Of course, my inner teacher’s pet just soared. But get this shit. During my conversation with Del, I asked him what the “all that damage gave me a career” line was because I couldn’t remember it and thought it was so stunning. And just like that, he said, “I have a copy of the script you can have if you’d like it.”

“Oh my god, I’d love it,” I said.

So Del walked back into the theater, and two minutes later gave me an autographed copy of last night’s show–all twenty pages and eighty-five minutes worth of material on paper. He signed it, “Marcus–Thanks for coming and keep writing–Del Shores.” For me, this was like being given the Holy Grail, or at least the Homo Grail. I felt like I’d just won the lottery. Y’all, inside I was screaming like a junior high cheerleader and wanted to fangirl all over Del, but outside I was my typical monotone self as I said, “Thank you, I’ll keep it forever.” Later I thought, God, Marcus, you could show a LITTLE emotion. Like, surely there’s a middle ground between deadpan gratitude and bursting out into, “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket.”

I’ll work on that.

But seriously, I can’t wait to read Del’s autographed script. A year and a half ago I sold most of my worldly possessions and now live basically as a minimalist. Consequently, “stuff,” doesn’t mean much to me anymore. But earlier today I actually considered getting a safety deposit box just to put the script in it.

Disney World and Disneyland have a customer-service-related practice called Magical Moments. Magical Moments are the unexpected “extras” that cast members (employees) often give guests–a free refill for a child’s spilled drink, a free pass to the front of a long line. As I understand it, Magical Moments aren’t something you can ask for, they’re just given to you for no apparent reason. This last year has been the most difficult year of my life. Currently I don’t have a steady job and am laid up in bed at my parents’ house blowing snot into the inside of my Fruit of the Loom t-shirt. But this is the way I’m choosing to look at life and especially last night–magical–a place where the wonderful and encouraging can suddenly bloom alongside the challenging and perhaps because of it, a world where even the most difficult of circumstances can be used as compost for something new, bright, and beautiful.

Create, Adjust, and Maneuver (Blog #395)

Last night was one of the best night’s I’ve had in a while. Our improv group, The Razorlaughs, performed in Tulsa at a venue called The Rabbit Hole. A few of our regular members were unable to attend, so at first it was just going to be my friend Aaron and me. (I realize that, grammatically, that should be Aaron and I, Mom.) But at the last-minute our friend Victoria jumped in, and y’all, last night was her first improv show ever, but she did great! We had a small audience, a baker’s dozen, but all of them were into the show, and most of them participated. As a performer, this makes all the difference, performing for people who want to be performed to.

In the above photo, we are making a nod to one of our improv games–Stand, Sit, Kneel–where someone always has to be standing, sitting, or kneeling. (Therefore, if one person changes their position, the others have to also.) In the picture below, Aaron and I were playing a game called Pillars with two audience members, who had to “fill in the blanks” or give us suggestions at random times during the game.

One of the highlights of last night’s show was that my friend Kara, whom I went to high school with, came to watch. She even got up on stage. (She also took the above photos.) When we graduated, Kara was the valedictorian of our class, and I was the salutatorian, so I couldn’t help but notice how well she did with The Alphabet Game, where players have a conversation in which the first sentence starts with A, the next with B, and so on. When it came to the letter X and it was Kara’s turn to speak, she said, “Xerxes (pronounced Zerksies) only knows. (Pause.) It starts with an X, I promise.” So this morning I texted Kara, referenced this moment on stage, and said, “#ThingsOnlyValedictoriansSay.”

Last week at therapy I told my therapist that I was doing the Autoimmune Paleo (AIP) diet, which basically means eating nothing enjoyable–wheat, dairy, tomatoes, legumes, eggs, nuts, or alcohol. Later she told me, “Go easy on yourself. It’s okay to modify. If you want to eat some nuts, eat some frickin’ nuts.” So last night after the show I took her advice to heart. Aaron, Victoria, Kara, and I met at Kilkenny’s, a cool Irish pub, and whereas I stuck to AIP for my meal, I decided to have a drink. I told myself, “It’s okay to modify, Marcus. If you want to have some vodka, have some vodka.”

When our group wrapped up for the evening and said our goodbyes, I walked around the corner at Kilkenny’s and ran into my swing dancing friends Gregg and Rita, who had come by for a bite after last night’s celebratory swing dance. (Yesterday was International Dance Day). Y’all, it was the perfect little unexpected reunion. They were with their son and some of his friends, and everyone was so kind. We sat for a couple of hours and just caught up, talking about dance, work, family, earrings–you name it.

It was a wonderful night.

This is what I want for my life.

Now it’s two in the afternoon, and I’m back in Arkansas. When I first woke up this morning, I thought I was going to be sick because my sinuses were running. Maybe it’s just allergies, I thought. Still, I took some probiotics that usually help my sinuses, lay back down for a nap, and have been hitting the water pretty hard since I woke back up. (Water covers a multitude of sins.) I just had breakfast, and I need to get on the road again in an hour and a half, since I’m seeing a show in Little Rock tonight. I don’t have a “deep thought” for the day, but I do wish you could see an improv show–the way the people on stage have NO idea what’s about to happen, but are still able to create, adjust, and maneuver their way into something fun. More and more, this is what I want for my life, to be able to rise to any occasion, to take what life gives me, roll with it, and enjoy.

All The Pieces for Healing (Blog #281)

Yesterday when I rinsed out my sinuses, something new came out–a clear blob, about the size of a dime, with the consistency of a jellyfish. That’s peculiar, I thought. A quick Google search revealed that it may have been–possibly–something called biofilm, a protective coating sometimes formed by harmful bacteria that makes getting rid of them difficult. A bacterial condom, if you will. In my nose. The body is such a mystery. Anyway, whatever that thing was, I’m glad it’s not inside me anymore. This is how my grandpa used to feel about farts. “More room on the outside than there is on the inside,” he would say.

Last night I went to bed at two in the morning but lay awake for over four hours, part of the time watching Netflix, but mostly wondering why I wasn’t tired. Maybe I’m feeling better, I thought. Maybe I’m feeling worse. Finally, I decided it was because I forgot to take Benadryl, something I’ve been using lately to help with allergies, but only at night because it makes me drowsy. I hope I’m not becoming addicted, I thought. But then I got out of bed, tossed back a couple pink antihistamines, and was out before I knew it–until two this afternoon.

Today I ran some errands and ended up buying two new herbal teas. This is something I’ve been doing lately, trying different teas to hopefully boost my immune system, decrease my allergies, and heal my sinuses. I’ve inadvertently started a collection. I’m one of those people. (Shit.) So far, I’m not sure the teas are making a difference, but at least they taste nice enough and have fewer calories than alcohol. That being said, they are also significantly more boring, by comparison. I mean, when was the last time a warm cup of dandelion tea got anyone laid? (Tequila makes my clothes fall off, Mom.)

Well, actually scotch, but I digress.

Earlier this week I finished the two-thousand-piece puzzle my family started working on over the holidays. Considering that my nephews were turning the house upside down and the fact that my sister found a couple pieces in the pockets of my mom’s housecoat, I kept thinking I’d get to the end of the puzzle and find pieces missing. But that wasn’t the case. All the pieces were there. Everything came together. (Miracles never cease.)

Last night while meditating I decided to start thinking of my body as strong, even when I don’t feel well. My logic for this is that even though I’ve been having significant allergy and sinus issues these last few months, there are hundreds of problems I don’t have. Like, I don’t have boils, leprosy, or diverticulitis, to name a few examples. Whenever I get a cut, my body heals it. Likewise, it fights off numerous infections and neutralizes various threats every day, largely without my help. So I’ve got to assume it’s doing the best it can, that eventually we’ll get things figured out.

With this new attitude in mind, I’ve been more optimistic today. Next week I’m seeing a new medical doctor, and I plan to look further into alternative therapies, things like acupuncture. I’m actually excited about finding an answer, getting myself back in tip-top shape. My retired psychologist friend Craig says that every piece of a puzzle is important, that there are no unimportant pieces. I guess for a while it’s felt like some of my pieces were missing, like I’m an incomplete puzzle. But I’m starting to believe that all the pieces for healing really are here, it’s just a matter of putting them together in the right order and of being patient, trusting that all things are worked out in their own time.
